Information about Le Collect’If Paille
An abundant, local, low-tech, low-carbon, sustainable, minimally processed, traditional resource that provides a high level of comfort, especially in summer, and can be used to construct passive buildings... straw, a by-product of agriculture, ticks all the boxes for the ideal insulation material and deserves a place of honour in the insulation of both new and existing buildings.
Based on this observation, and given that straw bales are a raw product that can be used without resorting to industrial processing, enthusiasts came together to form the French Straw Construction Network (RFCP) in 2006 in order to share their practices and also to have them recognised as a common construction technique with the validation by the C2P of professional rules for straw construction in 2012. The national network is currently working on the development of other professional rules, particularly for external wall insulation, as part of POP 2030 with the support of ADEME.
Local collectives such as Collect'If Paille for the Île-de-France region are working to promote straw as a material locally in all its forms, communicating widely about the material and creating links between all those involved in straw construction and, more broadly, in bio- and geo-sourced materials.
